A. Smith Bowman’s distilling roots began before Prohibition. The Bowman family had a dairy & granary farm in Fairfax County , Virginia that they called Sunset Hills. Excess grain from the farm was used to start distilling spirits. In 1935, after the Repeal of Prohibition, Abram Smith Bowman built and licensed a slightly more modern distillery. This was the first licensed distillery after Prohibition on the East Coast. In 1988 , the distillery was moved to its current location, nestled in the historic city of Fredericksburg , VA in Spotsylvania County. Here, A. Smith Bowman continued the tradition of making hand crafted, small batch, premium spirits. It’s undeniable the Bowman family has a rich history and provided great contributions to our country, the state of Virginia, and the whiskey industry. The A. Smith Bowman distillery is micro distillery out of Fairfax, Virginia and is owned by the New Orleans based Sazerac Company, whose holdings also include the Buffalo Trace and 1792 Barton Distillery. For a long time the Bowman distillery was a one brand distillery producing Virginia Gentleman bourbon. Then it started producing the Bowman line of bourbon which include a 90 proof small batch(the one being reviewed), 100 proof single barrel and limited barrel proof small batch. The distillate used in the Bowman line of bourbon comes from the Buffalo Trace distillery and then is distilled again in the Bowman distillery’s massive pot still for an overall triple distilled Virginia whiskey.
Aroma of caramelized apples, roasted nuts, vanilla custard and freshly baked cookies. Notes of gingerbread, chocolate, toffee and coconut cream on the palate. Fragrant nose of marmalade and soft biscuits with notes of toffee, leather, figs and almonds. Center-palate is dominated by signature notes of apples and pears which lead to a long, dry finish.
